You
Should Be Ashamed! by Dr. Israel Eldad (Published on March 11, 1994 in Yediot Aharonot.)
[On Friday, March 4, 1994, just one week after Dr. Goldstein attacked
Arabs at the Cave of Machpela, the Chief of Police decided to prevent
Jews from praying at the Western Wall to avoid any violent attacks against
them by Arabs. This was the first time in 27 years that such action was
taken. This decision, of course, did not go uncriticized by Dr Israel
Eldad.]
I am referring here, of course, to the frightening and dangerous act of the Minister of Police and Chief of Police who gave orders to evacuate Jewish worshippers from the courtyard of the [Western] Wall to - according to the justification given by the Israeli government and the Israeli police - "prevent attacks against individuals." No, don't expect that I am automatically going to begin my rebuke with the words "You won't believe me if I tell you." From here on in everything is believable. From the most shocking to the most grotesque and shameful. It seems that since the handshake (which bordered on kissing), and the (signed!) agreements with the arch-killer and his subsequent, almost literal, crowning; the Israeli government has lost any trace of shame. However, for me at least, there remained a gap between the loss of political shame and the total contemptibility, or folly in fact. That is what I thought, but apparently I was wrong. For what can be more contemptible than a Jewish government in the Land of Israel, in the State of Israel, which evacuates - that sounds better than "expel" - Jewish worshippers in general, and the Western Wall, the Wailing Wall, in particular. [...]Why was this despicable act carried out? It must be for the security of the worshippers! The Minister of Police and the Chief of Police are worried about security and the danger to human life. The rioting Arab shabab on the Temple Mount have not only spit on worshippers at the Wall, but now they have been dropping stones onto the heads of Jewish worshippers. After all it would never occur to a Minister in Israel or a high-ranking officer that the rioters should be evacuated and not the worshippers. What a distorted mind that expels the attacked instead of the attackers. [...]The IDF in Gaza justifiably opens fire at stone-throwers who endanger the lives of soldiers. However, the Chief of Police has a newer and more original method: remove the Jews from the area. Is it not bad enough that a Jew cannot pray on the Temple Mount without permission? Will we once again be blowing the shofar there illegally? Who says Gaza-Jericho First - the truth is, the Temple Mount First. [...]And if someone from the reform movement, or some of [Rabbi] Hartman's people, think that it's only a matter for the ultra-orthodox at the Wall; they will learn just like our fathers' fathers in Germany learnt: they won't be saved from the stones, just as in Germany theyweren't saved from the enlightened gas temples. We don't need an independent State of Israel for such a fierce retreat. We have existed in exile for two thousand years, and sometimes quite comfortably. No goish police would ever have dared evacuate Jewish worshippers from a synagogue, which is less holier than the Western Wall. If after such a shameful act as this, the Chief of Police and even the Minister of Police is not immediately fired, it is a wonder that, in light of all that has gone on thus far, there are not more despairing Dr. Goldsteins growing up for a disaster. Today the "protection of life" removes Jews from the Western Wall - tomorrow from Acco, Jaffa, or Arad where Bedouins are already aspiring for autonomy just as are the Arabs in the Galilee. Where is the end of this "excuse" used by the Chief of Police concerning worshippers at the Western Wall? [...]This is not only a loss of shame, but also a loss of respect, and a loss of the most simple, elementary logic. |
